What is white rum?
The best white rum is a (sometimes) still somewhat underexposed rum variety. Despite the fact that the rum is mainly mixed with soft drinks or other (strong) liquors, the character of the rum itself can often be distinguished.
One misconception regarding this drink is its colour. It happens that good white rum matures in stainless steel barrels after distillation and therefore lacks a distinct character. But more often than not, the rums undergo ageing in oak barrels, with the contents being filtered before being bottled. The filtering removes most of the colour. So even though a rum is white, it may still have undergone barrel ageing. This translates to the final taste.
Its accessible character makes white rum the ideal drink for mixing or for use in a cocktail. However, there are also expressions that are best enjoyed on their own.
Production takes place in well-known rum countries, each country has its own production style, making it interesting to discover the differences. Typical of many white rums is the relatively fresh taste that goes well with a wide variety of beverages.
