What is spiced rum?

Rum is a distilled alcoholic beverage made from either sugarcane juice or sugarcane by-products, such as molasses, by a process of fermentation and distillation.

Rums come in a wide range of types. Rums can be categorized based by the production process. This can be either industrial or agricultural. The raw material used for producing the rum, sugar-cane and molasses.

We can differentiate by the yeast used for fermentation, natural or a cultivated yeast. And also the time of fermentation can be a factor to produce a specific rum. The distillation process that is used to produce a rum can be through still production or distillation columns.

And also colour and, of course, ageing time are also distinctive characteristics of the rums that are available at Sasma. When it comes to spiced rums, another factor plays a part.

Spiced rums obtain their flavours through the addition of spices. In some occurrences, the spiced rum obtains the flavour by adding caramel. Most spiced rums are darker and are based on gold rums.

There are spiced rums that are significantly darker. Some brands of rum are made from white rums and darkened with caramel colouring. The spices used in spiced rum consist of cinnamon, rosemary, aniseed, cloves, pepper, and cardamom. Rum production dates back to the 17th century in the Caribbean and South America. Today, the majority of the world’s rum production still takes place in these regions.

While Light Rums are commonly used in cocktails, spiced rums are an extremely versatile category of spirits. Spiced rum can be enjoyed on its own or can also be use in a wide variety of cocktails. Many brands of rum include a spiced rum in their collection.
