Frequently Asked Questions

What Alcohol Is Made From Sugarcane?

Sugarcane is the primary ingredient in the production of several types of alcohol, each with unique characteristics and uses. The most direct and well-known alcohols made from sugarcane are Rum and Cachaça.

  • Rum: This spirit is produced by fermenting and distilling sugarcane juice, molasses (a byproduct of sugar production), or sugarcane syrup. It comes in various styles, from light to dark and aged.
  • Cachaça: This is Brazil’s national spirit and is made specifically from fermented and distilled fresh sugarcane juice. It has a distinct flavor profile compared to rum.

Neutral Sugarcane Alcohol is produced through extensive distillation of sugarcane-based fermented liquids. This process removes most of the flavor compounds, resulting in a high-proof, relatively neutral alcohol. Neutral sugarcane alcohol serves as an excellent base for:

  • Vodka: While traditionally made from grains or potatoes, some vodkas are produced using neutral sugarcane alcohol.
  • Liqueurs: The neutral base allows the flavors of added fruits, herbs, or spices to shine through

Is Sugarcane Alcohol Safe For Your Skin?

Sugarcane Alcohol is a great base for cosmetic products. Sasma offers 99.9% organic sugarcane alcohol that is primarily used in cosmetics as a solvent, extraction agent, preservative, or antimicrobial compound. The spirit is free of harmful chemicals and safe for the skin.

What Are The Benefits Of Sugarcane Alcohol?

In regards to skincare and cosmetic products, sugarcane alcohol offers several benefits:

  • Natural Origin: It is derived from a renewable natural resource.
  • Solvent: It effectively dissolves many other compounds, making it useful in formulations.
  • Preservative: It helps to inhibit microbial growth, extending the shelf life of products.

HOW ITS MADE

During the production process, sugarcane juice is collected fermented, and distilled to produce the final product of Neutral Sugarcane Alcohol.

STEP ONE

Extracting Sugarcane Juice

The first step in the production of Neutral Sugarcane Alcohol is to extract sugar-rich cane juice from the cane stalks by crushing them with an extractor or expeller. Upon extraction, the juice is gathered and delivered to the fermentation tank.

STEP TWO

Fermentation

Once the sugarcane juice is gathered in the fermentation tank, yeast is added to the juice. Upon mixing, the yeast enzymes will catalyze a reaction that generates ethanol. After juice extraction, there is a residue leftover that is referred to as fibrous bagasse, containing a moisture content of 45 to 50%. This is typically combusted to generate both electricity and heat for in-factory use. The mixture resulting from fermentation contains between 5-12% ethanol by weight, which we now refer to as beer. Next, the beer is transported to the distillation columns.

STEP THREE

Distillation and Dehydration

During this process, the ethanol is recovered in the distillation column. Once the ethanol is recovered, the purity of the ethanol can range from 92 to 95%. Thus, further dehydration is required to separate the water and obtain a higher ethanol purity. A common process to do this would be with molecular sieves. The final result of this is a fuel-grade anhydrous ethanol that is 200 proof.
