What is non-food grade alcohol?
Non-food grade alcohol is ethanol produced and certified for use in applications outside of food and beverage consumption — including pharmaceutical production, cosmetic and fragrance formulations, electronics manufacturing, and industrial processes. Depending on the application, non-food grade alcohol may be denatured, anhydrous, pharmaceutical-grade GMP certified, or organic certified. The right grade depends on the application, regulatory requirements, and market destination.
Our non-food alcohol range
Ethanol produced under EU Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) conditions and compliant with major international pharmacopeia standards — BP, EP, USP, and JP. Suitable for the production of medicinal drugs, disinfectants, tinctures, laboratory solvents, and medical device manufacturing. Products can be filtered to special micron filter requirements on request and denatured on request.
Our pharmaceutical grade range includes:
High-purity ethanol for use as a solvent, carrier, preservative, and antimicrobial agent in cosmetic and fragrance formulations. Available in denatured, anhydrous, organic-certified, and synthetic anhydrous options — giving cosmetic producers full flexibility across formulation and excise requirements.
Our cosmetic grade range includes:
High-purity anhydrous and absolute ethanol for electronics manufacturing, circuit board cleaning, and precision industrial applications. Very low impurity levels and consistent quality are critical for electronics applications — our electronic grade range covers purity levels from anhydrous through to 99.9% absolute.
Our electronic grade range includes:
Denatured ethanol at three purity levels for cleaning, disinfection, solvent, paint, aerosol, and specialty chemical applications. All products are produced with approved denaturants — rendering them unfit for human consumption and reducing excise duties — while retaining neutral odour and solvent properties.
Our industrial grade range includes:
Applications
Non-food grade alcohol is used across the following industries and applications:

- Cosmetics & personal care — solvent, carrier, preservative, and antimicrobial agent for perfumes, skin care, and personal care formulations
- Electronics manufacturing — cleaning of circuit boards, sensitive electronic components, and precision equipment
- Industrial cleaning — surface and equipment cleaning, disinfectants, and sanitation products
- Paints, coatings & inks — solvent for paints, coatings, and ink formulations
- Aerosol products — carrier and propellant component in aerosol formulations
- Laboratory use — solvent and reagent for laboratory research and extraction applications

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between food-grade and non-food grade alcohol?
Food-grade alcohol is non-denatured ethanol produced for human consumption, meeting international food safety standards. Non-food grade alcohol covers a broader range of applications — including pharmaceutical, cosmetic, electronic, and industrial uses — and may be denatured, anhydrous, or produced under specific GMP or pharmacopeia standards depending on the application. Contact our sales team to confirm the right product for your use case.
What is denatured alcohol and why is it used in industrial and cosmetic applications?
Denatured alcohol is ethanol to which approved denaturants — such as Bitrex, DEP, or MEK — have been added, rendering it unfit for human consumption. This allows industrial and cosmetic producers to avoid excise duties associated with beverage alcohol while retaining the solvent and functional properties of high-purity ethanol. The alcohol retains its neutral odour and does not interfere with the final product formulation.
What GMP and pharmacopeia standards do Sasma's pharmaceutical grade products comply with?
Our pharmaceutical grade products comply with British Pharmacopeia (BP), European Pharmacopeia (EP), United States Pharmacopeia (USP), and Japanese Pharmacopeia (JP) standards depending on the product. GMP-certified products are produced under EU Good Manufacturing Practice conditions. Contact our sales team to confirm which standards apply to the product you require.
Can non-food grade alcohol be filtered to special micron filter requirements?
Yes. Selected pharmaceutical grade products can be filtered to special micron filter requirements on request. Contact our sales team to discuss your specific filtration requirements.
What organic certified options are available for cosmetic applications?
Sasma supplies EU Organic and USDA NOP certified organic wheat alcohol and organic sugarcane alcohol at purity levels from 96% to 99.9% — suitable for producers developing certified organic cosmetic formulations. Contact our sales team to confirm available certifications and current stock.
What documentation is provided with each shipment?
All Sasma non-food grade alcohol shipments include full quality and compliance documentation including Certificates of Analysis (CoA) and Safety Data Sheets (SDS). GMP certificates, pharmacopeia compliance certificates, batch release certificates, and organic certification documents are available where applicable.
