Frequently Asked Questions
What is Shōchū?
Shōchū is a traditional Japanese distilled spirit, typically produced from rice, barley, sweet potato, or other starches. It is distilled to a lower ABV than most Western spirits — generally between 25% and 45% — and carries a cleaner, more delicate character than its Korean counterpart, Soju. It is Japan’s most consumed domestic spirit by volume.
What is the difference between Shōchū and Soju?
Shōchū and Soju are distinct products from different countries. Shōchū is a Japanese spirit produced under specific Japanese regulations, typically from a single base ingredient such as rice, barley, or sweet potato. Soju is a Korean spirit often produced from a blend of grains or starches. The two differ in production method, flavour profile, and regulatory definition — and cannot be used interchangeably on product labelling in most markets.
What are the typical applications for bulk Shōchū?
Shōchū is well suited to private label bottling, RTD and canned cocktail formulations, and flavoured spirits development. Its growing international profile makes it a commercially attractive category for brand owners targeting premium Asian-inspired products.
