As we begin 2023, we’re reflecting on the importance of organic certifications across the alcohol beverage industry. Organic options are springing up everywhere you look as there is increasing demand globally, with clean-label ingredients becoming more popular.

Last year more consumers explored the benefits of organic alcohol. However, only 1% of commercial spirits are certified organic, according to Nielsen data. Due to global and economic concerns, organic grains are hard to access, making certification even more important.

What is Considered Organic Alcohol?

Organic spirits are made from organic grains and fruits, free from pesticides and herbicides. To be considered organic, regulations must be followed to reduce chemical exposure. Each country has different requirements, but the standard regards all stages of production, from processing to packaging.

Certifications Needed For High-Quality Spirits

This year, premiumization has become a dominant trend that we will see continue in 2023. More consumers define premium by the bottle and are looking for “quality ingredients without additives or preservatives,” according to Beverage Dynamics.

Beverage firms must be approved to ensure consumer safety. Sasma has acquired several certifications, including organic: Organic USDA, EU Organic, and COSMOS, over the last two decades.

  • Organic USDA NOP Certification: Sasma fulfills strict production, handling, and labeling requirements, per The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA). In the U.S., organic farming must meet routine inspections for three years before approval.
  • Organic EU Certification: All distillates from spirits to cosmetics must be regulated per Europe’s legal requirements. That includes climate and environmental protection, conservation of soil fertility, and the absence of GMOs, chemicals, and synthetic products.
  • Organic COSMOS Certification: COSMOS provides guidelines for environmentally conscious production and organic standards. They promote environmentally friendly production processes that consider human health and the environment, including ingredients, process, and chemical regulation.

We also adhere to the ISO 9001 Quality Management system and the ISO 22000:2018 Food Safety Management systems and follow rigorous standards for Kosher and pharma-grade alcohol.
